Looking for alternative schools in Wilmington, NC? Here are some popular options

Your guide to alternative schools in the Wilmington, NC area

For newcomers to the Wilmington area, becoming acquainted with the school choices can be a bit overwhelming. From Montessori environments, private schools and charter schools, there are so many impressive choices in alternative schools.

Don’t get us wrong, Wilmington has fantastic public schools—but for those seeking alternatives, here are some popular options to consider:

Charter Schools

All children eligible for public school are eligible for charter schools at little to no cost to parents. The schools are state-funded but managed by private educational boards from the school rather than a county school board. This is a great alternative school option for those not wanting to pay an entire mortgage for education. Here are some charter schools that we love:

GLOW Academy: The Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington was founded in 2016 with an all-girls focus on education. Currently, the school hosts middle and high school grades on an impressive modern campus, complete with a culinary lab. (6 through 12)

American Leadership Academy: Recognized as one of the top charter schools in Wilmington, the Home of the Navigators is proud to support education for all families in a moral, wholesome environment. (Pre-K through 8)

Wilmington School of the Arts: Awaken and nurture your child’s creative spirit at Wilmington School of the Arts. This charter integrates the arts into its program-based learning, encouraging students to learn, grow, and create. (K through 5)

Classical Charter Schools: A member of the Classical Charter Schools of America network, this alternative school prioritizes a safe environment for achievement. Their team of qualified instructors helps students score higher with their proven curricula. (K through 5)

Private and Faith-Based Schools

Cape Fear Academy: This academy boasts a challenging liberal arts curriculum enhanced by STEM offerings, an impressive campus, competitive sports and the most robust AP program of any local private school. (K through 12)

Wilmington Christian Academy: WCA is currently the largest private Christian school in the region and is a member of the American Association of Christian Schools and the NC Christian School Association. (K through 12)

Providence Prepatory Academy is another emerging option, with a very unique structure. While some may think this is a homeschool co-op, Providence instead is a University model of education in which students spend a few days in the classroom and a few days at home working to reinforce learning. (K through 12)

St. Mary Catholic School: The first Catholic school in Wilmington and one of the oldest in North Carolina. Located downtown in the heart of Wilmington this school has some of the most impressive architectural details. (K through 8)
