Local Outings to Explore When the Family Comes to Visit

Check out this list of local outings and activities—guaranteed to impress your holiday guests!

Got company? That’s okay, we’ve got you! When the whole family is in town for the holidays, these local outings are fun for everyone. Here’s some inspiration for getting out of the house (and into some fresh air). Plus, they’re all fabulous ways to connect with our community!

Carolina Beach and Carolina Beach State Park

Carolina Beach

It’s hard not to enjoy a day trip to Carolina Beach. From local shops, bites, and attractions to explore, there’s a pleasant surprise behind every corner.

If you really want to get active, Carolina Beach State Park has miles of trails to explore. Wander through natural habitats, and catch some stunning views of the Lower Cape Fear River as you meander these paths. Besides, after being pent up under the same roof, you know a little fresh air will do everyone some good!

Fort Fisher

For getting outside and satisfying your family’s history buff, Fort Fisher does the trick. This state park has battle history, places for the kiddos to run, and a beach for exploration.

Animal lovers (or folks that just want to stay inside…you’re safe here) can also enjoy the aquarium! Pro tip: park here and drop the rest of the crew off. You can head to the nearby Tiki bar if you really want to…just saying.

Wrightsville Beach Loop

Wrightsville Beach Loop for when the in-laws visit

So, your family wants to go on a walk and see the beach, but at the same time. The Wrightsville Beach Loop was made for it. And don’t worry, it’s stroller-friendly! This walking trail encircles some highlights in Wrightsville Beach and passes by excellent spots for a pit stop. Namely, some of the beach town’s most popular bars…so enjoy responsibly! But, there’s also plenty of other options, like a hotdog from Trolly Stop or tacos from Tower 7.

Sporty members and the littlest of the bunch will appreciate the playground and park, equipped with courts for basketball and tennis. Plus, Airlie Gardens is a short drive away!

The Cargo District

This Wilmington hub has some of our favorite foods, shops, and casual activities. In short, plenty of entertainment for the whole family, and the entire day! Planning an outing to Cargo is easy on their site, or do what we do: park for the day, stroll, and explore as you like.

Wilmington Water Tours

Maybe the fam has come to visit before…but maybe you could spice things up with an entirely new view? Book a Wilmington Water Tours trip for everyone and see downtown Wilmington from the water. These cruises offer history, folklore, and even drinks.

Book a daily cruise or find a specialty tour that suits your style. Either way, you can’t go wrong!

Shop Local

We are firm believers in Wilmington’s shopping scene. You can make several outings with the family, and exploring the rich assortment of local businesses our town has to offer is so much fun. From vintage finds to high-end antiques, the second-hand choices here are unmatched. But, we also have so many curated boutiques and creative storefronts to check out! Whatever you are interested in finding (or maybe stuffing a stocking with), we have it!

Not sure where to start? The Cotton Exchange is a great hub for the whole family. It spans multiple levels, and has something for every shopper.

Another excellent idea would be to go late in the day, and take in all the festive window displays up this time of year! With the annual Battle of the Bulbs competition, plus holiday pop-ups, events, and shows, there are tons of festive sightings to enjoy while you shop.
